Loyalty to Ones Family

Right from the beginning of the play this theme of loyalty is shown, and it starts with a more light and healthy way as compared to events that happen later in the play. In the first act we have Laertes about to embark on his journey to France and he is saying good bye to his sister, Ophelia. During this moving-picture show we see an approximately contemporary conversation between an older brother and young sister as Laertes warns Ophelia against the advances of Hamlet (I.III.13-47). This shows Laertes loyalty as he is both wary of Hamlet involvement with his sister and all told nurturing to Ophelia.
However this affection for his sister and distrust of Hamlet manifests itself in a much more sinister fashion later in the play, showing both the virtues and failings of family loyalty.
After this scene, almost all other examples of family loyalty are to the detriment of someone else, including scene five between Hamlet and his Fathers Ghost. In this scene Hamlet is told of his uncles betrayal and murder of Hamlet Sr. and is tasked with his murder.
