The Italian Baroque: Caravaggio, Bernini, and Borromini

In the 17th century, during the period of the Counter-Reformation, baroqueness style came into favor. Baroque is a style evident in paintings, sculpture and computer architecture that promotes movement, energy and tension. Strong contrasts of light and shadow enhance free rein and give the works a new dimension. This striking sheen using pronounced light and dark is called tenebrism and is credited to Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio for originating the style. Much of Italian Baroque reflects the social turmoil of the time. The Council of Trent and the Catholic Church proclaimed that artworks should be clear, intelligible, and realistically interpreted in order to encourage piety. The response was a turning toward naturalism, wound up engagement and excitement; the dynamic new style became the way of life for the outpouring of religious passion.
In painting, Baroque is characterized by black and detailed compositions, strong contrasts of light and dark, and bold effects.
