“Nowadays, many historians get hold of less for their craft than did the great system builders of the nineteenth century, only if they remain happily convinced of the validity of historical knowledge, deep down due limits, and of its enduring value as a steering of understanding the ‘conditions of man.’”

For centuries, people have tried to determine and specify what history is. Some scholars admit that history is ever-changing and remove their theories to these conditions while other theories simply fall out of favor or are recognized for their fallacies. While some scholars theatre of operations “history” they view it on a worldly scale, while til now others base their presumptions and determinations on their own ancestry. In our choose of “What is history?” and “Is history a science?” we have chosen examine the works of historians such as Leopold von Ranke, H.T. Buckle, Karl Marx, Friedrich Engels, and Lawrence Stone. These historians created some of the more or less basic infrastructures of historical knowledge and understanding that are still maintained and used to this day.




The first historian, Leopold von Ranke, has been called the “father of modern historical scholarship.” In his book, Histories of the Latin and Germanic Nations, von Ranke attempts to view the related histories of the Latin and Germanic nations in their unity. As the readings showed, “He was convinced that if a historian studied the relevant documents with sufficient critical acumen, he could discover ‘what really happened’ in the past.” Von Ranke believed that presenting the facts is the “supreme law”, no matter how unpleasant they may be.
