From brutal murder and torture to a life of stigma, discriminate from society and often their families⦠its a dark turn over with little light for women who are branded witches in India. The work of witch-hunting cuts a wide swathe across 17 states in India.
With the view to gaining better insights into the centuries old problem that continues untrammelled, experts and stakeholders from various quatern regions came together over three regional consultations this year.
Sponsored by the matter Commission for Women (NCW) and unionized by the New Delhi based Partners for police and Development (PLD) in collaboration with regional groups, the consultations were held in Raipur,Guwahati and Ajmer.
The first, atomic number 99 Region Consultation: Violations Relating to Women Targeted as Witches, was held in Raipur on April 28. The participator groups were the complaisant Institute of Research and Action (SIRSA) and the Centre for Social Justice (CSJ) .
The second, the northeast region consultations, was in Guwahati on June 2, organized in collaboration with the North East Network (NEN).
The third, the northerly and western region consultations, was in Ajmer on June 29, with partner presidential term Mahila Jan Adhikar Samiti (MJAS) .
The main objectives of the regional consultations were:
* To identify the areas of prevalence of witch-hunting in varied parts of the country;
* To identify and understand the different forms of force-out that are perpetrated in the name of witch-hunting;
* To collate the anecdotal and otherwise information available with womens groups from the various regions;
* Consolidate concerns and recommendations that move up with respect to witch-hunting in each of the regions.
