Throughout the story of the halt The Catcher in the Rye Holden Caulfield went through different dos of grieving. They were ira and bargaining, depression and loneliness, and an upward turn. Certain events took place during the book that showed what stage he was sledding through as the reader progressed in the book. He started in shock and denial and one word-painting was very evident of that.
First off, one scene showed Holden going through anger and bargaining. This was evident when Holden tells of when he went around punching the windows and w exclusivelys because of the destruction of Allie, his younger brother. He showed that he was very upset because exclusively told his rage was let out in a lurid manner, which broke his hands. This is said in the text as I was only thirteen, and they were going to have me psychoanalyzed and all, because I broke all the windows in the garageâ¦I slept in the garage the darkness he died, and I broke all the goddam windows with my fist, in force(p) for the hell of it (Salinger 38-9). At the moment it just seemed like all he could do because death always wins and all individual can do is accept it or try and refuse it ever happened and that is what Holden did.
He also bargained with God in a way when he donated money to the nuns because it was as if he was gainful for his brother rear end. He was desperate to get his brother back and he knew that nothing would bring him back to life and it was symbolic of bargaining with God. The reader probably knows how it feels to lose someone and that it causes a person to perform certain actions that are not always best alone it seems right at the conviction because they are extremely desperate to get that lost savour one back. It is also a cry for help to those who love him because he is trying to say help me I am depressed and cannot get over my loss. However everyone just plan he was mentally ill and needed therapy instead of activated help.
