The poem Mental Cases by Wilfred Owen effectively and skilfully creates a sense of menace. He uses this to full effect to give the commentator gruesome insight as to what front line armed combat in a world war was truly resembling.
The structure of the poem itself is used to invoke thought in the commentator. To stick the reader think of the horrible inductuation these soldiers where in. A hot example of this is the entire first stanza. This stanza boils down to a serial of rhetorical questions, leading on from one another. This is combined with the oxymoron tiresome panic. Combining the multitude of questions and confused words it read bid the word of a soldier suffering from shellshock.
Why sit they here in twilight, enforces this by at an early stage. It sounds like a shell-shocked soldier staring into the sky in a disorienting daze. Adding even more to this is the rhyme scheme, or kind of lack of. This rhyme scheme occurs once per stanza. This brings a rather disconcerting feel to the poem.
The second stanza serves to answer the questions the first stanza proposed to the reader and in very graphic detail.
A reoccurring theme in this poem is the frequent connotations. These consist of graphic, painful, brutal deaths.
The battlefield is practically compared directly to hell itself and other times the pain inflicted upon the soldiers sounds to torturous to be anything other than a punishment from hell. An example of this is: cerebrovascular accident on stroke of pain, referring to the battle wounds, the infections on the untreated soldiers and the symptoms of the amazing living conditions. Multitudinous murders, referring to the literal genocide happening in front of the soldiers very eyes. This also brings up the lasting cordial effects seeing these images would have on them. Images, which would haunt them forever. This ties in well with the poems title. Carnage incomparable, invoking a mental image of the corpse strewn battlefield. Sometimes with little but remains of limbs left from explosions....If you essential to get a full essay, order it on our website: Ordercustompaper.com
