The Three Different Religions in Purple Hibiscus
Chimamanda Ngozi Adichies novel Purple Hibiscus, published by Anchor Books in 2004, is a first person narrative of life in the political turmoil of post-compound Nigeria. The novel is told through the perspective of 15 year old Kambili Achike, the protagonist, who was raised in a rattling devout Catholic home. Her father, Eugene, was a very strict Catholic who projected himself to outsiders as an ideal Catholic man, yet subjected his take in family Kambili, her brother Jaja, and her mother to various forms of psychological and physical harm. Eugene demanded nonsuch from his children in school, at home, and in their religious practices, and if perfection was non achieved, beatings would ensue. Kambilis life changes after she is beaten by Eugene and indeed leaves her house to live with Eugenes sister Ifeoma, who encourages her children to share their thoughts and feelings. man living with Aunty Ifeoma, Kambili realized that she could defy Eugenes strict views of Catholicism, and adopt the more liberal form of Catholicism respectable by Aunty Ifeoma one that can still cut the traditions of the Igbo people the culture her grandfather, Papa Nnukwu.

He was a member from the Igbo culture, and did non want to let western influence get to him. throughout his life he did not let Christianity, a western religion, change his religious beliefs of the Igbo culture. Papa Nnukwu held the many animist aspects of Igbo religion and traditions, much to the dismay of Eugene. Like many people from the colonial era, Papa Nnukwu wanted to hold on to aspects of his culture untouched by Europeans.
