Arthur Conan Doyles The Sign of Four tells the story of a researcher named Sherlock Holmes and his good friend Dr. Watson. In a small-scale excerpt, Holmes skills are put to the test when he is handed a notice and asked to tell about the owner. At first, the Doctor (the narrator) finds it funny, for he thinks it is an impossible task. However, Holmes surprises him as he begins to catch the heart. He starts out with the statement The watch has been recently cleaned, which robs me of my most connotative facts (Doyle 92). This makes the reader believe Holmes could not make anything of the watch, to be equal to tell about its owner. To our surprise, he continues on to state how the watch belonged to the Doctors oldest brother, and that the brother obtained the watch from his father. The Doctor was shocked and cark by Holmes conclusions. It was, after all, his brother that Holmes so bluntly talked about.
